The Asian Games 2023 are currently underway. Bangladesh beat Pakistan by six wickets in the bronze medal match of the multinational event and claimed bronze in Hangzhou, China. Batting first, Pakistan scored 64 runs in their five overs. Due to rain, the match was limited to thirteen overs at first. Then after, this match was limited to five overs, as more rain tripped down.
Pakistan was 48/1 when the rain came down again and then according to the DLS method, the Bangla Tigers had to chase 65 runs in their five overs. Arshad Iqbal picked up two wickets in the opening over of Bangladesh's innings and gave Pakistan the early advantage in the run chase. However, they made a comeback by scoring 31 runs off the following two overs.
However, Bangladesh came back with Afif Hossain's 20 runs off 11 deliveries and Yasir Ali's 16-ball 38. It was a do-or-die final delivery for the entering new batter Rakibul after Yasir's dismissal on the game's last ball left Bangladesh in desperate need of victory. In the last ball, four runs were required and Rakibul hit a four in the last bowl to win it for the Bangla Tigers and secured a bronze for his side.
Pakistan shocked by Bangladesh
Pakistan's innings started off with a 47-run stand between Khushdil Shah and Mirza Baig after rain delayed the start. The latter scored 32 runs in 18 balls. Rakibul was also the pick of the bowlers with his two overs going for only 12 runs. As the rain poured down the match was reduced to five overs and according to the DLS method Bangladesh had to chase 65 runs.
This is only the second medal for Bangladesh in the multinational tournament. The first bronze was won by the women's cricket team, the Tigresses. Co-incidentally, they also defeated Pakistan to win their medal, marking two victories over the same country across both competitions.
In the final of the Asian Games, India will face Afghanistan for the Gold medal match.
