Asian Games 2023: India clinches gold medal in men's squash team event by 2-1 triumph over Pakistan

The Asian Games 2023 is turning out to be a great affair for the Indian contingent as they continue to win medals. In the latest update in medals tally India won a gold medal in squash. On Saturday, at the Asian Games 2023, the Indian men's squash team clinched a gold medal by defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the final.

The best-of-three encounter commenced with Mahesh M facing a straight games loss to Nasir Iqbal (8-11, 3-11, 2-11). Saurav Ghosal levelled the contest with an impressive 11-5, 11-1, 11-3 victory over Muhammad Asim. The decisive match between Abhay Singh and Noor Zaman went the full distance, and despite Zaman having two match points in the final game, Singh triumphed 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10.

In a remarkable comeback, Singh held firm, securing four consecutive points to claim the top prize for India. This victory not only upgraded India's bronze from the 2018 Jakarta Games but also served as revenge for their group stage loss to the same opposition. The gold medal marked India's 10th in the competition and the 36th overall at the Hangzhou Games. Prior to this, the women's team had secured a bronze medal in the tournament.

Shooters have emerged as multi-medal performers

Among the Indian athletes participating in the Games, shooters have delivered noteworthy performances with multiple medal achievements. Pistol shooter Esha Singh, for instance, secured an impressive tally of four medals, including one gold and three silver. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar also stood out, earning a total of four medals; two gold, one silver, and one bronze. Accomplished rifle shooter Ashi Chouksey achieved a commendable feat with three medals, comprising two silver and one bronze.

Other Indian athletes who clinched two medals each include Palak Gulia (gold & silver), Sift Kaur Samra (gold & silver), Anush Agarwalla (gold & bronze), Ashish (silver & bronze), Punit Kumar (silver & bronze), Anant Jeet Singh Naruka (silver & bronze), Ramita Jindal (silver & bronze), Bheem Singh (silver & bronze), and Jaswinder Singh (silver & bronze).
