Australia dominated the first innings of the fourth Test by putting up a massive 480 runs on the board, but Ravichandran Ashwin shone with his 6-wicket haul and gave the visitors a tough time at the crease. Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green resumed the day for the visitors and scored 208 runs to form the highest partnership in India for Australia. Both looked to be taking the game away from the hosts, but India pulled a few strings in the second session, picking up three crucial wickets.
Khawaja, who scored his first Test century against India yesterday, was dismissed for 180, and Green, who smashed his maiden Test century, was dismissed for 114. It was Ashwin, who brought India back into the game with double strikes in an over.
In the 131st over, the Indian spin wizard broke the massive partnership by sending Green back to the pavilion. The right-handed batter, who scored a magnificent century on his first tour to India, was dismissed for 114 off the second ball of the over. The veteran spinner struck again, dismissing wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey for a duck in the final ball of the over.
Ashwin's quick wickets gave India life
India got some relief from Ashwin, who again gave Men in Blue a wicket of Mitchell Starc for his fourth scalp. His last three wickets were in a quick time. However, heading into the final session, India had a big hurdle in the form of Khawaja.
The Aussie opener looked set to smash his maiden double century but was sent back by Axar Patel just after the break. The Australian tail-enders did not gave the wicket away as Todd Murphy and Nathan Lyon added 50 runs for the ninth wicket and gave more frustration to Rohit Sharma's side.
However, Ashwin gave India the breakthrough, once again, dismissing Murphy (41 off 61 balls). India's long toil came to an end after Ashwin picked up his sixth wicket in the form of Nathan Lyon. Needing 481 to take a first innings lead, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opened the innings for a 10-over contest on Day 2. Australia started the proceedings with Mitchell Starc and will look to pick up at least one wicket before the players leave the field.
This is how Twitter reacted to Ashwin's 6-wicket haul:
