India got off to a winning start in the three-match ODI series against Australia after clinching the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1. The Men in Blue secured a five-wicket victory in the first encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday, March 17. While KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja were the highlight of the chase with incredible match-winning performances, Indian pace duo Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj shone on the lively surface.
After their brilliant display in the first ODI, Shami and Siraj, who took three wickets each, got together on the field for a casual chat. The talk was mostly about Team India's success, but Shami took the opportunity to ask his colleague about his wicket-taking celebration. The current world No. 1 ODI bowler is often seen imitating Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Siuuuu' celebration after dismissing a batter.
“I have a question for you as well. Can you tell us what is the secret behind your celebration,” asked Shami during their conversation.
Siraj responded: "My celebration is simple. I'm a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo so I try to follow him. When a batter is bowled I celebrate the wicket in that fashion, but if he is caught at fine leg or similar fielding position I don't do it."
Shami responded to Siraj's reply by sharing a piece of advice. "Ek advice hain, acha baat hain aap kisi k fan hain. As a fast bowler aapko yeh jumpo se thoda sa duur rehna chahiye.” (I want to give you an advice. It's good that you are someone's fan. But as a fast bowler you need to keep yourself away from such jumps).
India aim to seal ODI series
The second encounter between the two sides will take place on Sunday, March 19 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. India's regular captain Rohit Sharma will also return to lead the side after missing the first ODI due to family commitment. The ongoing series is crucial for both teams as Australia look to take revenge for their Test defeat and a win would see them become the No. 1 team in ODIs. Meanwhile, India will want to retain the top spot by winnig the second ODI.
