Royal Challengers Bangalore returned to winning ways after handing Delhi Capitals their fifth straight defeat in the Indian Premier League 2023. Bangalore moved up to seventh place in the points table after defeating Delhi by 23 runs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, April 15. Virat Kohli's magnificent half-century and the pacers' outstanding bowling performance gave RCB their second win of the tournament.
After losing the toss, RCB were asked to bat first, and Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis got the team off to a great start. They were 89/1 after 10 overs, and it appeared that another 200+ score was on the cards. However, after their captain was dismissed in the fifth over, the rest of the batters failed to make an impact.
Glenn Maxwell and Mahipal Lomror tried to form a partnership with Kohli but were thwarted by the Delhi spinners. However, their contributions, together with Kohli's 50 off 34 balls and Shahabaz Ahmed's quick fire of 20 runs off 12 balls towards the end of the innings, helped RCB post a respectable total of 174 runs.
Kohli hit one six and six fours to smash his third fifty of this season. The former RCB captain was adjudged Player of the Match for his match-winning display on a pitch where the rest of the batters struggled to find runs. However, soon after reaching the half-century mark, he was dismissed to Lalit Yadav's juicy full toss.
"It was a tricky one. When it went up in the air, I made sure there was no one close to me. I made sure I grabbed it solidly. I was quite disappointed that I got out to a full toss. I've been playing really well," Kohli said in the post-match presentation.
Vijaykumar Vyshak shines on debut match
Defending an average total, their bowling, which is often criticised for not stepping up, got them off to a flying start, with Mohammed Siraj and Wayne Parnell doing the majority of the damage in the powerplay. Capitals were reduced to 2/3 in the third over and they find ways to pick up wickets in the regular intervals.
Debutant Vijaykumar Vyshak was the highlight of the second half, bowling a stunning spell to dismiss dangerous David Warner and in-form Axar Patel. Manish Pandey (50 off 38 balls) was their only fighter, while none of their batters played responsibly to ensure them a victory in this tournament.
This is how the fans reacted to Virat Kohli winning the Player of the Match award:
