English broadcaster and journalist Piers Morgan reiterated his claim that Arsenal's failure to sign Cristiano Ronaldo in January was the main reason for their failure to win the Premier League title. Morgan had suggested the Portugal skipper would be a great signing when he left Manchester United, but Arsenal fans mocked him at the time.

The Gunners were top of the points table but slumped in the closing stages of the season and missed out on the title by five points. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City became league champions and completed an unprecedented treble after winning the FA Cup final. Morgan, an Arsenal supporter, has now taken a dig at fans for mocking his suggestion to sign Ronaldo.

"Arsenal fans laughed at me last year when I suggested that Ronaldo would be a great signing for the rest of the season when he left United. Are they laughing now? Do we not honestly think someone like Ronaldo in that run-in, when Jesus got injured, that Ronaldo couldn't have led our line and perhaps got us over the line?" said Morgan.

"Not just because of the goals but because of the winning mentality. You put someone like that into the dressing room, all the young players would gravitate to that mentality," Morgan added.

Morgan pushed Arsenal to sign Ronaldo when he was a free agent in January

The Portuguese superstar was available as a free agent in January after leaving the Red Devils in November 2022. Morgan believed that Ronaldo's inclusion in the squad would help Arsenal win their first Premier League title since 2004, so he pushed them to sign the legendary striker.

Arsenal's dominant season came crashing down in April with three-match draws on the bounce against Liverpool (2-2), West Ham United (2-2) and Southampton (3-3). Meanwhile, Ronaldo headed to Saudi Arabia and joined Al Nassr. The 38-year-old scored 14 goals in 19 games across competitions, but his side also finished second in the Saudi Pro League.

Earlier, in an interview with Morgan, Ronaldo praised Arsenal and admitted he wanted to see them win the Premier League. “Manchester (United) first, and if not, Arsenal are a team that I like to see play. I like the team. I like the coach. I think they have a good team. If Manchester United don’t win the Premier League, I will be happy if Arsenal wins," he said.
