Former West Indies batsman Chris Gayle recently reflected on his incredible 175* innings for the Bangalore Franchise in the Indian T20 League 2013, calling it a special day not only for him but for fans as well. Gayle broke the record for the fastest hundred in T20 cricket, reaching the milestone in just 30 balls, and ended up with a score of 175 not out in 66 balls - the highest score in Indian T20 League history.
"It was like the world stopped. It was like when Usain Bolt ran that 100m and everything stood still... I am glad to be a part of history. Scoring 100 off 30 balls," Gayle said during an interaction with former India batsman Robin Uthappa. Gayle went on to explain how he targeted the top pacers of his era, and how this strategy helped him succeed against opposition teams.
Gayle's innings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was a sight to behold as he took on the Pune Warriors bowlers with ease, hitting 13 boundaries and 17 sixes. Gayle and Tilakaratne Dilshan opened the innings for RCB and added 167 for the first wicket, with Dilshan scoring just 33 runs in comparison to Gayle's 175 not out. The carnage was witnessed first-hand by Uthappa, who was playing for Pune Warriors that day. Despite their efforts, Pune Warriors managed only 133 runs as RCB won the match by a whopping 130 runs.
Gayle attributed his success to dominating fast bowlers
"If you dominate their best fast bowler, those to come are shaking in their pants. I like to capitalize on that because if I take down the main bowler, you have this guy or this guy coming after. It's not gonna work all the time but that's my kind of mentality. I came across some great fast bowlers in my international career up until my last World Cup," he added.
"It was fantastic man… I win most battles against fast bowlers. I am the king; I am the winner. Any fast bowler objects to that, come see me. We can sit one-on-one, we can go into the ring and punch it out or we can have a talk. One winner. Every single fast bowler, I have had a piece of them," Gayle added.
