Gautam Gambhir lashed out at senior journalist Rajat Sharma, who slammed him for his feud with Virat Kohli after the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Ekana Stadium on Monday, May 1. The LSG mentor took to his Twitter handle on Wednesday to post a cryptic tweet, seemingly aimed at Rajat, a former Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) president.
A thrilling low-scoring win by RCB was overshadowed by an ugly verbal brawl between the two 2011 World Cup winners. The owners of one of the worst incidents in IPL history are no strangers to on-field spats, as the two had a dispute during the 2013 season when Gambhir was captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, the visuals of recent fight between two Delhi players left the cricket fraternity in shock.
How did the Rajat-Gambhir rivalry begin?
Following the altercation, Rajat, in a programme on India TV, angered Gambhir by claiming that his ego grew after becoming a Member of Parliament and that Kohli's popularity worries him.
"Gambhir has been provoked. After fighting the elections and becoming a Member of the Parliament, Gambhir’s ego has increased even more. How Virat Kohli’s popularity worries Gambhir was witnessed yet again, clearly on the ground. Kohli is a player who is always aggressive, doesn’t tolerate any nonsense and so he gave Gambhir an apt reply," Rajat said live on India TV.
"In all, what Gambhir did is against the sportsman spirit. This behaviour is not befitting of a former India player and a current Member of Parliament. Such incidents ruin the reputation of cricket and should not have happened," he added.
Gambhir hit back at the former DCCA president with an angry tweet in which he called Rajat's remarks as 'paid PR'.
"Man who ran away from Delhi Cricket citing “pressure” seems over eager to sell paid PR as concern for cricket! Yahi kalyug hai jahan ‘bhagode’ apni adalat chalate hain (This is the modern era, those who run away are the ones running their own courts of law)", the left-handed batter tweeted without naming Rajat directly.
According to a PTI report, an eyewitness to the fight said it all started when LSG opener Kyle Mayers asked Kohli why he was constantly abusing him and the team. The witness also revealed the conversation between Kohli and Gambhir in which the latter warns the former RCB captain not to say anything to his players, whom he considered his “family”. In reply to the left-hander, Kohli said, “Then you take care of your family.”
Here's how fans reacted to Gautam Gambhir's cryptic tweet:

Man who ran away from his Constituency to earn money in commercial league. This shows priority of non serious public representative, who keep abusing for all failure and victories. People should pull collars of such representative, who abstains from office and don't even ask…

You are an MP. Isn’t it shameful for you to pick fight with cricketers who represent our nation. Don’t even understand how you find time for cricket coaching, that too for IPL. Constituency and administration is just retirement perks, is it?
