England resumed the innings at 116/6 on day two of the first test against South Africa. Day one turned out to be a low-scoring one with English batters succumbing to Rabada's carnage. Day two resumed with Ollie Pope and Stuart Broad marking guard in the middle. Ollie Pope remained not out on 61 while Broad was yet to open his account in the match.

The South African pacer Rabada got rid of Ollie Pope ten minutes into the day and the road turned dark for the English camp. The Three Lions were bundled out for just 165 runs, with Ollie Pope top-scoring solid 73 runs. Skipper Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee opened the innings for the Proteas as they were well ahead in the game.

The openers took their time to get settled and started making a slow yet steady move. The duo put on a fifty-run partnership and carried on from there. An extremely steady opening partnership came to an end when the Proteas lost their Skipper, Dean Elgar, for a 47-run inning.

Matthew Potts then got rid of Keegan Petersen for 24 runs. It was a great second session for the Proteas as they lost only two wickets after putting 158 on board. Aiden Markram returned to the pavilion right after the third session resumed and it marked the beginning of the collapse. South Africa kept losing wickets at regular intervals thereafter as they ended up losing their sixth wicket after putting 210 on board.

Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen stood up to the occasion and produced a vital partnership of 72 runs for the seventh wicket. South Africa ended up putting 289 runs for the loss of seven wickets at the end of day two. Marco Jansen remained unbeaten on forty-one runs, with Rabada remaining not out at the other end for three runs.
