Mumbai Indians won their second game in a row, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. The five-time champions had an underwhelming start to the 2023 Indian Premier League, but they were able to get back on track by defeating Delhi Capitals in their third match and now secured a convincing win against their regular prey KKR.

Venkatesh Iyer stole the show at Mumbai's fortress, scoring his first IPL century in the first innings, but all his efforts went in vain as Mumbai batters comfortably chased down the target. While chasing 186, Rohit Sharma, who came in as an Impact Player, and Ishan Kishan got MI off to a flying start. Rohit got out for 20 runs, but he did his partΒ by putting on a 62-run first-wicket stand in 5 overs.

Kishan played an aggressive innings and scored 58 runs off 25 balls to set the stage for the team. Suryakumar Yadav, who captained MI after Rohit Sharma suffered a stomach bug, contributed 45 runs off 25 balls. He was in the worst form of his career but was able to get back on track when his team regained momentum. SKY and Tilak Varma kept Mumbai on pace with a 60-run third-wicket stand that shifted the contest in Mumbai's path.

Earlier, Venky Iyer played a brilliant innings and smashed 104 runs off 51 to take his team to a respectable total. None of the batters was able to play responsibly and as a result, they had to settle for a moderate score. The left-hander is the first batsman to score a century for KKR since Brendon McCullum's stunning performance in the inaugural edition of the IPL. He was also named Player of the Match, but it didn't make him happy because his team fell against MI for the 23rd time in IPL history.

"Would have been happier if we would've finished on the winning side but happy with my performance. They've shown faith in me and it was a very beautiful wicket to bat on. Once you've scored those 30-40 runs, it's just about how you continue," Iyer said during the post-match presentation.
