Considered to be the future superstar of Indian cricket, Shubman Gill had a dream run in the first half of 2023, but he failed to continue that momentum in the second half. The 23-year-old, for the second straight game, was dismissed cheaply in the ongoing Test series against West Indies. The strategy of playing Gill at No. 3 in the longer format has not worked out well for India.

The Men in Blue have dropped their veteran one-down batter Cheteshwar Pujara for the Caribbean tour following his poor form. Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal was initially discussed as a replacement, but the lot went to Gill when the former took over the opening role. However, India's hunt for Pujara's replacement continues as Gill has not been able to perform well in his new position.

In the first Test in Dominica, Gill was dismissed for just 6 runs by left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican. The story was the same for the Punjab-born cricketer in the first innings of the second Test. He managed just 10 runs off 12 balls on Day 1 in Trinidad after playing away from his body and getting out to Windies pacer Kemar Roach.

In the first session, both the openers put on a partnership of 139 runs and India were well ahead. However, with Jaiswal dismissed for 57 runs, things turned in favour of the hosts. Gill was expected to continue the surge alongside captain Rohit Sharma, but the former struggled to find resistance and was eventually dismissed despite picking up a couple of boundaries in his brief stay.

Soon after, Rohit fell after hitting 80 off 143 balls, while vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane also left before the final ball of the second session. This put West Indies in the driver's seat, but Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja regained control in the third session to end Day 2 on a high note for the visitors. India finished Day 1 on 288/4 with Kohli on 87 off 161 and Jadeja on 36 off 84.
