India are racing along in the first Test against Bangladesh at Chattogram. They smashed 404 in the first innings. Then, the bowling unit breathed fire on the Bangladesh batters in the first innings as a five-wicket haul from Kuldeep Yadav kept Bangladesh down to just 150. They had a lead of 254 in the first innings and then declared at 258-2 in the second innings. India set a target of 512 for Bangladesh to chase.

One of the architects for India in the second innings was Shubman Gill. The right-handed batter made a superlative 110 off 152, with 10 fours and three sixes. Thanks to his quickfire hundred in the second innings, India could declare quickly. Wasim Jaffer was particularly impressed by Gill’s knock and had warm words of appreciation for him.

"Well, it's good that it (Test century) came. He missed out on a couple of opportunities before but I am happy that the monkey is off his back. He's a class player. After Virat Kohli, he'll probably be the next big batsman that's gonna come out of the Indian camp. He's like a three-format player for me," Jaffer said.

Gill can play in the middle order for India as well - Wasim Jaffer

There are reports that Rohit Sharma has recovered from his thumb injury and he will fly to Bangladesh and join the squad to play in the second Test. That means Gill will have to be benched but Jaffer believes that Gill would end up playing in the middle order in the second Test. Gill has also played as a middle-order batter at the U-19 level and for the Punjab side in domestic cricket.

"Shubman Gill has played in the middle order for his state team. He'll get used to it. As an opener, if you are slotted in the middle order, it's not a big deal because you're used to playing spin," He added. Gill has been in the Test side for some time now. He showed everyone what he can do at the Test level when he played a superb knock of 91 against Australia at the Gabba in 2021.
