India beat Australia in the first ODI of a three-match series by five wickets at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Chasing a decent total, Indian batters toyed with Aussies all around the ground and won the game for the team. Skipper KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shubman Gill scored half-centuries, while Pacer Mohammed Shami clinched five wickets for India.
Earlier, after winning the toss, India skipper KL Rahul opted to bowl first. His decision went well with the team, as pacer Mohammed Shami drew first blood. He dismissed opener Mitchell Marsh for a mere four runs. However, after his departure, David Warner and Steve Smith added 94 runs for the second wicket.
Warner, in his innings, scored a brilliant half-century as he hammered 52 runs off 53 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes. Meanwhile, Smith, in his inning, scored 41 runs off 60 balls with the help of three fours and a six. Smith missed his half-century as Shami's amazing inswinger caught him off guard.
After their departure, a brief knock from wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis helped Australia post a competitive total of 276/10 in 50 overs. For India, pacer Mohammed Shami took five wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja got one wicket each. Another pacer, Shardul Thakur, went wicketless.
KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav made chase easy
Chasing a competitive total under lights, India got off to a flying start. Openers Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad added 142 runs for the first wicket in just 21 overs. Gaikwad, in his innings, scored 71 runs off 77 balls with the help of ten boundaries. However, he missed a well-deserved century as spinner Adam Zampa clinched his wicket.
After his departure, a lack of communication between Gill and Shreyas Iyer led to an unfortunate runout. Iyer was dismissed after scoring just three runs off eight deliveries. Soon Gill also departed by scoring 74 runs off 63 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes. After that, skipper KL Rahul, along with Ishan Kishan, added 34 runs for the fourth wicket. Kishan, in his inning, scored 18 runs off 26 balls with the help of two boundaries.
