Sri Lanka’s star leg spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, has taken retirement from Test cricket after playing four Tests in his career. He informed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) of his decision, as reported, Hasaranga has taken this decision to prolong his limited-overs cricket career.
The all-rounder has been a player in demand, especially in T20 cricket. In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auctions, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) purchased him for Rs. 10.75 crores for the 16th edition of the cash-rich league. However, the left-handed batter has played only four Test matches for the Island nation, but he has represented his national side in 48 ODIs and 58 T20I games so far in his career.
“We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward,” said Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, in the press release.
Wanindu Hasaranga has played in different T20 leagues all over the world
It is pertinent to mention that, the 26-year-old made his longer format debut against South Africa in December 2020, while his last Test was in April 2021 against Bangladesh. Whereas in T20 league cricket, he has played for St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the CPL, Quetta Gladiators (PSL), Kandy Falcons and Jaffna Kings (LPL), Desert Vipers (IL T20), and Washington Freedom (MLC).
In the end, Wanindu Hasaranga is currently playing in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023, where he is leading the B-Love Kandy side, which is currently standing in the second position in the points table of LPL 2023. B-Love Kandy side has won four and lost the same number of games in the eight matches played this season.
The star Sri Lankan all-rounder is performing with both bat and ball in the ongoing LPL 2023. The leg spinner is the third-highest wicket-taker in the top wicket-taker list, with 11 wickets at an average of 15.82 and an economy rate of under six. Hasaranga with the bat is in the fourth spot with a total of 212 runs, an average of 35.33, and a strike rate close to 200.
