The coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy has finally started with the first Test at Nagpur commencing on Thursday, 9 February. The hosts, eyeing a hattrick of series win over the Aussies, got off to a flying start. Mohammed Siraj got Usman Khawaja out lbw with his first delivery, and in the very next over, Mohammed Shami cleaned up the other opener, David Warner.

Following the early set-back, the visitors recovered well, riding on a steady third-wicket partnership between Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith. The men from down under could take a comfortable lunch with 76 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets after 32 overs played.

Ravindra Jadeja picked up three in quick succession

With Smith and Labuschagne looking well set at the crease, Australian ambitions for the second session must have been high. However, Ravindra Jadeja showed his magic to tear apart Australia's middle order. In the fifth ball of the 36th over, Jadeja bowled a beauty to dismiss Labuschagne, the good length delivery flew past the Australia batter, who could not get any willow on to it, and KS Bharat did the rest behind the stumps in a flash to get India the much-needed breakthrough.

In the very next ball, Jadeja pitched a ball that didn't turn to catch Matt Renshaw lbw. The on-field call of out sustained itself after Renshaw's review, with the ball hitting the stumps at the umpire's call. Although Jadeja did not get his hattrick with his next delivery, next picked up the big wicket of Steve Smith with the final ball of the 42nd over with a beautiful delivery hitting the danger-man's furnitures.

Naturally, this remarkable spell from Jadeja sparked immediate reactions on Twitter. Fans primarily focused on how Australian preparations were centred more on facing Ravichandran Ashwin's off-break deliveries. Still, Jadeja's left-arm spin surprised the Aussies, like an out-of-syllabus question in exams.
