The much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series is off to a mouth-watering start, with the first Test played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium at Nagpur. India are sitting comfortably at 321/7 with both batters, Ravindra Jadeja (66 off 170) and Axar Patel (52 off 102) looking well set at the crease as the hosts eye a massive first innings lead. At the end of Day 2 (Friday), the hosts have taken the upper hand with a first innings lead of 144 runs.

Remarkably, the ongoing 4-match BGT series will be India’s last chance of qualifying for the Global Test Championships final to be played at the Oval between 7 and 11 June 2023. Moreover, there is a third-consecutive Test series victory over the Kangaroos on the line for India after having won the last two BGT series in Australia. As such, it is only natural for the hosts to put in their best efforts against the Australian challenge.

Day 2 belonged to Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Todd Murphy

There were several stars on Day 2 of the first BGT Test, the obvious one being the centurion, Rohit Sharma. The Indian skipper led from the front, holding one end as the wickets kept falling at the other. The Indian skipper finally fell prey to his Australian counterpart, Pat Cummin’s beauty that hit his furnitures. Rohit remained India’s highest scorer with 120 runs scored off 212 deliveries. Notably, he became the first player to get to a ton in the current BGT series.

Alongside Rohit, Ravindra Jadeja put in an exceptional shift with the willow after shining bright with the ball. The five-wicket haul he completed on Day 1 complimented well with his fifty making it a brilliant all-around performance. The 34-year-old will resume action on Day 3 and look to increase his tally of runs.

Last but not least, Australia’s debutant off-spinner Todd Murphy quietly made the day his own. The 22-year-old Victorian picked up five wickets in his 36 overs, giving away 82 runs, a remarkable debut indeed. Despite his best efforts, the men from down under will be under massive pressure as we move to Day 3, the moving day in Test cricket on Saturday.
