If a player has an outstanding game in a competition like the Indian Premier League, the match might be over in a relatively short period of time. This is more likely to occur if a bowler records a hat-trick during the innings. The opposition team finds it very challenging to bounce back after the early loss of wickets.
Hat-tricks are rare in the IPL, and there have been several seasons where the bowler failed to take even one hat-trick. On the other hand, we have observed numerous hat-tricks occurring in a handful of seasons. All of the hat-tricks that have occurred in the history of the IPL will be listed on this page.
In the 13th match of the Indian Premier League, the Gujarat Titans locked horns against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmadabad which the Knight Riders went on to win on the last ball of the match, thanks to a stunning knock of 48 runs from just 21 balls, which included six massive sixes and one four.
Lakshmipati Balaji - First bowler to take a hat-trick
In the second innings, the Gujarat franchise stand-in skipper, Rashid Khan came to ball the 17th over, which was his final over of the spell, and he snapped a hat-trick in the first three balls of the over. He scalped the wickets of Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Shardul Thakur.
The first bowler to complete a hat-trick in the lucrative competition was Lakshmipathy Balaji. In terms of hat-tricks taken, the second IPL season was rather exceptional as part-time bowlers reached the milestone.
Turning up for Punjab in 2009, Yuvraj Singh recorded two hat-tricks, while Rohit Sharma recorded one for the Deccan Chargers. Three bowlers managed to take a hat-trick each season throughout the course of the next three years. 2010 saw Praveen Kumar, 2011 saw Amit Mishr, and 2012 saw Ajit Chandila. 2013 also saw Amit Mishra and Sunil Narine, who bowled superbly for the Kolkata Knight Riders squad, picking up a hat-trick.
Both the players that picked a hat trick in 2014 were from the Rajasthan Royals. Two cricketers, Pravin Tambe, and Shane Watson, grabbed three wickets each against SRH and KKR respectively. In 2016, Axar Patel was a member of the Punjab side and bowled a fantastic spell of 4/21 against Gujarat Lions, which included a hat-trick.
