The Bangalore franchise made their return at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium after almost four years and registered a convincing victory over the Mumbai franchise by 8 wickets in the match no. 5 of the 2023 Indian T20 League. Asking to bat first, Mumbai posted a total of 171 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, powered by the fiery knock by Tilak Verma. In reply, Bangalore chased 172 runs in the 17th over, anchored by Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli.
Mumbai didn’t have a great start as they lost 4 wickets for 48 runs inside nine overs. Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green got out cheaply before the wicket of Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav also continued his poor form as he got out after scoring 15 runs.
After that, Tilak Verma and Nehal Wadhera took the innings further by adding 50 runs for the 5th wicket. Wadhera got out after scoring 21 runs off 13 balls with one four and two sixes. However, Tilak remained unbeaten on 84 runs off 46 balls. He smashed nine fours and four sixes during his innings as Mumbai went past 170.
Karn Sharma scalped 2 wickets for Bangalore, while Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel, Reece Topley, Akash Deep and Michael Bracewell shared a wicket each.
Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli laid the foundation as Bangalore chased the winning total within 17 overs.
Chasing the winning total, skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli gave a firing start to Bangalore. The opening pair put up a partnership of 148 runs in 14.5 overs and took the game away from Mumbai. Du Plessis got out after scoring 73 runs off 43 balls, hitting five fours and six sixes, while Kohli remained unbeaten on 82 runs off 49 balls including six fours and five sixes.
Kohli finished the game with a six as Bangalore chased the total by losing 2 wickets with 22 balls to start their 2023 season with a win. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell also remained unbeaten by smashing 12 runs off just three balls. For Mumbai, Arshad Khan and Cameron Green took a wicket each. The next match of the Indian T20 League will be played between Chennai and Lucknow at the Chepauk stadium on Monday.
