Chennai Super Kings (CSK) sealed their Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs in style with a massive 77-run win over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, May 20. DC managed to spoil Punjab Kings' (PBKS) party in their last match, but the ploy didn't work against the four-time champions. It's the end of the road for David Warner's DC this season, while CSK will be hoping to finish second in the points standings.

Opting to bat first, the CSK openers showed their intent right from the first over and got off to a blistering start in a must-win game. CSK were obviously going to get an above-par total with the kind of start Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway produced, but it appeared like they got at least 40 more than DC would have liked. The right-hand left-hand combo stitched a 141-run partnership at the top before Gaikwad was dismissed for 79 in the 15th over.

It was raining boundaries in Delhi and it got stronger when big-hitter Shivam Dube joined the New Zealand batter. Dube hit an explosive 9-ball 22-run knock, while Conway appeared to be on his way to his first IPL century before being bowled for 87. Ravindra Jadeja (20 off 7 balls) added a finishing touch to take the team total to 223.

In reply, DC lost an early wicket of Prithvi Shaw in the second over, and they lost a couple of more wickets inside the powerplay as Deepak Chahar removed Philip Salt and Rilee Rossouw in successive deliveries in the fifth over. Then spinners came to the scene, and DC kept losing wickets kept at one end while skipper David Warner fought from the other.

Warner, single-handedly, steadied the ship, scoring 58-ball 86 to save the hosts from a much more humiliating defeat. Chahar got three wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana each took two. CSK, in fact, ticked all the boxes that would give them more confidence when playing in the knockout stages.
