Shane Keith Warne for nearly two decades of his playing career captivated the imagination of fans. The leg-spin legend would have turned 54 if not for his untimely death on 4th March 2022. Ball of the century to Mike Gatting –
Australia was touring England for the 1993 Ashes and it was Shane Warne’s first ever tour to the old enemy. Allan Border got Warne into the attack and Mike Gatting was on strike. In his very first ball, Shane Warne pitched the ball outside the leg stump and the ball turned miles. Mike Gatting, was left stunned when the ball pitching on the leg stump went on to hit the top of the off stump. The delivery was called the “Ball of the Century.”
Much publicized affair with Liz Hurley –
Shane Warne, was always in the news, be it for his on-field exploits or off-the-field activities. The former Australia legend was briefly engaged to Liz Hurley a noted actress before the two called it quits. Warner and Hurley were always spotted together before their split in 2013.
Leading Rajasthan Royals to a title win –
India launched its T20 league in early 2008 and Rajasthan chose Shane Warne as its leader. While the other teams went in for star names, Shane Warne built a team on merit. Despite a heavy loss in their first game, Rajasthan Royals created a stir. Shane Warne and MS Dhoni collided in the inaugural final as Rajasthan Royals won the title. Warne deservingly was in the middle of the action when the winnings run was hit as he was at the non-striker's end.
Shane Warne’s love for baked beans –
The Australian team was touring India in 1998 for a three-match test series and Tri-Series involving Zimbabwe. The stage was set for the showdown between Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne. His on-field battles with Sachin Tendulkar saw Shane Warne come a distant 2nd. Off the field, Shane Warne’s love for Baked Beans came to be known. The Australian leg spinner apparently was eating only canned baked beans during the entire India tour.
Helping Australia win the 1999 World Cup –
Steve Waugh and Shane Warne did not share the greatest of relationships. The 1999 World Cup won under Steve Waugh was due to the lion-hearted efforts of Shane Warne. The leg spinner first grabbed 4/29 from his ten overs including 4 maiden overs in the semi-finals against South Africa. Shane Warne then picked 4/33 in the final from his 9 overs to bowl out Pakistan for a mere 132 after being 68/2 at one stage. Australia chased down the target in 20 overs to win their 2nd World Cup title thanks to Shane Warne.
