Reports of Jasprit Bumrah's return to international cricket after an injury have been playing 'hide and seek' with cricket fans since last year, and interestingly, the game is not over yet. There were reports a few days ago that India's pace spearhead might make a comeback in August during the Ireland series. However, neither Bumrah nor the Indian Cricket Board officials are sure about the 29-year-old's return.
Meanwhile, in the latest update on his rehabilitation, Bumrah bowled seven overs in a day at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) nets. This will certainly raise the hopes of the right-arm pacer returning to the Indian team ahead of the major multi-national tournaments - Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023.
"For an injury of this nature, it is not wise to set any timeline as constant monitoring is necessary. But it can be said that Bumrah is recovering well, and he has bowled seven overs at NCA nets. It is a steady increase in his workload from the light workouts and bowling sessions of the initial period," a source tracking the development told PTI.
The source added that officials would closely monitor Bumrah's fitness. "He will play a few practice matches (at NCA) next month, and there will be a close assessment of his fitness then."
There's a thin line, and it needs to be thought about: Ravi Shastri's advice against rushing Bumrah back to fitness
Bumrah last played for India in the T20I series against Australia at home in September 2022. Bumrah underwent surgery for a recurring back niggle in New Zealand in March and has since been on the road to recovery. He was forced to miss the 2023 Indian Premier League and the World Test Championship final against Australia.
With World Cup approaching, the Indian Cricket Board is keen to play him in the Asia Cup 2023 starting last August, which will be huge preparation for the mega event in October-November. However, former India Head Coach Ravi Shastri has advised against rushing Bumrah back to fitness ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.
"He (Bumrah) is a very important cricketer. But if you rush him for the World Cup, then you might lose him for four months later on, much like Shaheen Afridi. So there's a thin line, and it needs to be thought about," Shastri told The Week in an interview.

Per day or per practice session?
— Aryan 45 🇮🇳 (@Iconic_Rohit) June 27, 2023
3 more than what he is supposed to bowl in the IPL next year. Why are the guys at NCA stressing him so much. 4 overs a day is just enough.
