"Story of Ambati Rayudu is one of the strangest stories to be recorded in Indian cricket," said prominent cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle after the former Indian middle order batter was dejected ahead of the 2019 ODI World Cup.

A month before the 50-over World Cup, Indian captain Virat Kohli told the media that Rayudu was assured of the No. 4 slot  but what happened to him was getting involved in the infamous '3D controversy'.

When the MSK Prasad-led Indian Cricket Board selection panel announced the 15-member Indian squad for the multi-national event, Rayudu's name was a surprise omission. The Hyderabadi batter has done everything possible for him to make it to the squad and even gained the captain's trust. But nothing went his way, and all-rounder Vijay Shankar took his place instead.

Rayudu didn't hesitate to vent his frustration publicly, tweeting, "Just Ordered a new set of 3d glasses to watch the world cup", which went viral on the internet in no time. Following that, he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Rayudu opens up about his shocking 2019 World Cup omission

Years after one of the biggest controversy in the Indian cricket, Rayudu has opened up about the shocking 2019 World Cup exclusion. In an interaction with TV9 Telugu, the 37-year-old revealed that the board officials had told him to be prepared for the mega event in 2018.

"The Indian Cricket Board officials in 2018 told me to be prepared for the 2019 World Cup," Rayudu said.

"I had some issues with the member of the selection committee when I was playing with them in the early stages of my career, which might be one of the reasons why I was out of the team in World Cup 2019" he added.

After Rayudu's tweet went viral on social media, MSK Prasad responded by saying that his emotions are 'running high at the moment' and that he needs some time to accept it.

"We have taken note of what Rayudu has tweeted. (But) Let's accept that emotions are running high at this moment. There is bound to be disappointment and there needs to be an outlet of expression as long as it's not out of line. He will need some time to soak in the disappointment and it's understandable," a senior board official had said.

Here's how social media reacted to Ambati Rayudu's statement:
