Afghanistan has won their first-ever T20I series against Pakistan and the first-ever ODI series against Bangladesh in 2023.

Afghanistan has been one of the most improved cricket teams in the last decade, more so in the last few years. Created some good players in the recent past like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad, Najibullah Zadran, Hazratullah Zazai, Mujeeb Zadran, Hameed Hasan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Noor Ahmad, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rahmat Shah, Ibrahim Zadran, Naveen Ul Haq, and many others, it seems like the team has finally come to its own in terms of being competitive against some of the best teams in the world, especially in the condition that favours their style of play.

Till the mid-2010s, Afghanistan had some good individual performers. The evolution of some very good spinners took place around the 2016-17 period when the Asian side found gems like Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Zadran. In the process, Afghanistan also found some good batters like Najibullah Zadran. Post-pandemic, Afghanistan has grown in stature by producing some capable batters at the top and good pacers, which was necessary for their team. The likes of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Naveen Ul Haq have come to the fore this way.

Series victories against full members in 2023

As a result, Afghanistan is better than ever in Cricket. In the ongoing calendar year, Afghanistan has achieved many firsts. In March 2023, Afghanistan won its first-ever T20I series against Pakistan. One might argue that Pakistan was not at their full strength. But Afghanistan could not win bilaterals against Pakistan in the past even against half-strength squads. Afghanistan beat Pakistan by 2-1 in the T20I series against Pakistan in UAE earlier this year.

Afghanistan also won an ODI against Sri Lanka in June but lost the series in the island nation. A shocking loss in the one-off Test against Bangladesh was unfortunate, but Afghanistan has roared back in style in the ODI series. With an ODI still to go in the series, the emerging Afghani side has beaten Bangladesh in their backyard. Since 2015, Afghanistan is only the second team after England to win an ODI series in Bangladesh. The rise of Afghanistan has been incredible.
