Controversy and Usman Khawaja go hand in hand and the southpaw remained at 195 when the Australian skipper Pat Cummins declared during the third Test of the series against the Dean Elgar-led South African team. Post the conclusion of the series, Khawaja opened up on several incidents that sparked shockwaves across the country.

For the unversed, Khawaja opened up on how he was called a ‘curry muncher’ when he grew up in the country. Fans, on the other hand, took cognizance of the same and claimed that the board must address the issues pertaining to the team and take decisions that would prevent the players from getting dejected.

“I used to be called a curry muncher all the time while growing up in Australia,” Khawaja was quoted as saying. One has to agree that Cricket Australia (CA) is yet to open up on the claims from Khawaja and it remains to be seen if they would come up with a statement at the earliest.

There’s subconscious bias: Usman Khawaja

“That’s where I’m trying to work with Cricket Australia saying, ‘Look, guys ... you invest a lot of money into this, but something’s not going right. You’ve been doing it for 10 years and nothing’s changed,” Khawaja was quoted as saying.

“There’s subconscious bias. If you have two cricketers, one brown, one white, both the same, the white coach is going to pick the white cricketer just because he has a son that might look similar to him. It’s what’s familiar to him,” said the Australian opener further.

“There’s been plenty of times I should’ve been picked for teams and I wasn’t. But it just made me have a bigger chip on my shoulder. We’ve come a long way. But I’ll keep doing it because I want people to know what it’s like,” he added. The Australian team will face off against India in a four-match Test series set to get underway in late February and it remains to be seen if his statements would affect his selection for the Border-Gavaskar trophy, given that it is one of the prestigious trophies going around, for the Baggy Greens after the Ashes.
