Team India stand-in captain Hardik Pandya and opener Shubman Gill are likely to be rested for the Ireland tour in August considering the workload management. Hardik was supposed to lead the team in the absence of senior players including captain Rohit Sharma. However, the Indian Cricket Board has stated that they will keep track of the all-rounder's workload and take a decision before announcing the squad.

The recent developments are in light of upcoming major multi-national tournaments such as the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup. Both Hardik and Gill are confirmed selections for the two events, and the board will want them to be fully fit for the 50-over tournaments. Notably, the duo are currently part of the ongoing West Indies tour. After the ongoing Test series, India will play three ODIs and five T20Is against the Windies.

According to an Indian Cricket Board source, Hardik will be Team India's vice-captain in the World Cup, and his participation in the three-match T20I series against Ireland would be dependent on his fitness status following the Caribbean tour.

"Nothing is finalised yet and it will also depend on how Hardik is feeling after the one-dayers and T20s in the West Indies. There is travelling involved and only a short turnaround of three days before one flies from Florida to Dublin. With World Cup being of primary importance, one has to factor in his workload. Let’s not forget he will be Rohit’s deputy in the World Cup," a source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Suryakumar Yadav may lead India in Ireland tour

The India-Ireland series will begin on August 18, while the second and third T20Is are scheduled on the 20th and 23rd respectively. Both Hardik and Gill will have to fly from the USA to Ireland and then to India before heading to Colombo for the Asia Cup, which will be a huge workload for both of them. Meanwhile, middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav is likely to lead India if Hardik is rested.
